About ICCommit What is the ICC programme?

The British Council's International Climate Champion programme is a global project which aims to support young people who are committed to action on climate change. These young people, known as International Climate Champions (ICCs), develop and implement projects within their communities to raise awareness of climate change. ICCs also work with other young people around the globe to share their ideas and collaborate on large scale projects. In 2008, there were over 800 ICCs in 29 countries. In 2009, the programme expanded to include 1000 ICCs in 30 countries.

What is ICCommit?

ICCommit is a project whose mission is to raise awareness about climate change and to encourage individuals to adopt more eco-friendly lifestyles. Launched in 2008 by a group of twelve Canadian Climate Champions, the project has expanded to every province and territory in Canada, as well as Brazil, France, Italy, Germany, India, and Japan. Participating Climate Champions give brief presentations at schools, summarizing the science behind climate change and detailing possible green solutions. Following the presentation, each student is asked to make a green commitment for one week. Examples include turning off and unplugging unused appliances, taking public transportation to school instead of driving, purchasing local foods, or packing trash-less lunches. As a reminder of their commitments, each student is provided with an "ICCommit" bracelet. To foster a sense of unity and perspective, commitments are recorded online, here at www.iccommit.org. In doing so, the participants will not only be able to share their commitments with other Canadian students, but will also realize how their small individual actions can make a significant difference when added up on a national, and international, level.
ICCommit is being continued and expanded in 2011.
